Sustainable Food System Task Group

Brad Kindler, Activist

Refocusing our attention towards a sustainable food system, we begin to view eating as an interconnected food-web, rather than a food chain, with us at the top. Indeed, the chemical inputs that a farmer applies to their field in the spring have profound implications on water quality, as much as they do on yield. Kitchen wastes that travel to the landfill could be composted for local soil amendment. The 1500 miles our average meal travels to arrive at our plate, uses large amounts of fossil fuels in shipping and refrigeration, emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

The food web, as you can imagine, is incredibly complex, but manageable. Our LGbD “Food-System” task group seeks to identify local solutions to some of the negative consequences of our contemporary food model. Through education and support of local food sustainablity initiatives, our goal is healthier land, people, and agricultural production.
